ABOUT DEPARTMENT
The Department of Linguistics was started in 1963 with Dr. Chandresekhar as its head. Only a diploma course in Linguistics was offered in the beginning. The Master’s and Doctoral programme were later introduced in 1966 when the then noted Indian linguist Professor P.B. Pandit joined the Department. Dr. R.N. Srivastava joined the Department as a Professor in 1976 and subsequently an advanced diploma course in Applied Linguistics and the M.Phil. programme, in place of the earlier M.Litt. programme, were introduced in 1978 and 1979 respectively. The department has been fortunate in attracting linguists trained in good academic institutions located in India and abroad. The significant number of international scholars from prestigious academic institutions seeking academic affiliation with the Department and the number of students admitted in the Department from at least ten countries indicate the international academic recognition that the department enjoys. The fact that about 35 students of the Department have been selected by Americans and British Universities in the last few years for pursuing doctoral research further speaks of the academic reputation of the Department. Eminent Indian Linguists who have taught at the Department include Prof. B.G. Mishra (ex-Director of the Central Institute of Hindi, Agra), Prof. C.J. Daswani, Prof. C. Ramarao, Prof Prem Singh, Prof A.K. Sinha and Prof K. V. Subbarao. In addition, many linguists of international repute have over the years been associated with the Department in various capacities. These include: Professors Gordon Fairbanks, Robert B. Lees, Gerald Kelly, Jame D McCawley, Jean Aitchison, Charles Kisseberth, Frankin C. Southworth, Richard Mckee, Yamuna Kachru, George Lakoff, Peter Trudgill, Alice Davison, Peter Hook, Hans Hock, Rajendra Singh, Kashi Wali, K.S. Yadurajan J.P.S. Oberoi, Andre Beteille, Sisir Kumar Das, B. Jernudd and J. Neustupny. The Department has also had the privilege of inviting eminent scholars including Andre Martinet, David Abercrombie, George Cardona, Eric Hamp, Peter Ladefoged, G.Nickel, R.M.W. Dixon and R. Posner, Braj B. Kachru, Y. Kachru and Noam Chomsky. It also had the honour of organizing the golden jublee celebrations of the Linguistics society of India and the Decennial celebrations of the Dravidian Linguistics Association.

Admissions
Master of Arts in Linguistics | Candidates can apply for admission as per requirements in Appendix A for the admission test to be conducted by the Department of Linguistics, University of Delhi, Delhi. On the basis of their performance (with a minimum pass percentage of 40% in the admission test), candidates (not more than five times the number of seats available) in order of merit, will be called for interview. Candidates called for interview will be required to produce all their original certificates/degree mark-sheets of Secondary School, Senior Secondary, B.A./B.Sc. Pass or Honours and M.A. examination etc. and other connected documents for verification.
Admission Lists will be prepared on the basis of academic record (30% weightage) performance in the admission test (50% weightage) and interview (20% weightage). For determining the academic record performance, percentage of Bachelor Degree Examination or the Master’s Degree Examination, whichever is better will be taken into consideration. The decision of the Linguistics Department Admission Committee will be final and binding on the candidates. The number of seats available for the academic session 2010-2011 is 35 plus the increase in seats as per University regulations for the OBC category.
Eligibility Conditions:
Candidates desirous of seeking admission to the first year of the two years M.A. course in the Department of Linguistics, University of Delhi, Delhi, must fulfill besides other requirements the requisite eligibility and course requirements as per details given in Appendix-A.
All admissions are subject to the following provisions of the University:
Admission of Foreign Students
Foreign students who seek admission to the M.A. in Linguistics course in the Department, by fulfilling the Course, Marks and Age requirement etc., are required to apply directly to the Deputy Dean, Foreign Students Registry, C/o Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi, Delhi-110007. The admission of Foreign Students, who have obtained the last qualifying degree from India, is subject to the similar admission procedure that is followed for the candidates belonging to the general category. No foreign student will be admitted directly by the Department.
Admission of Blind Students - Relaxation of marks up to 10% may be granted while determining the eligibility of such students for admission to the M.A. Course in the Department.
- Blind students should be given priority in admission to the Hostels of the University and Colleges.
- Special concession in tuition fee may be granted to Blind students. But such cases may be decided according to the individual merit of each case.
Admission of Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste/Tribes.
Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste/Tribes (SC/ST), while applying for admission to the M.A. Linguistics course in Department, are required to apply on the prescribed application form for Admission Test as per the schedule of admission prescribed for general category of students with the supporting certificate in original to the effect that he/she belongs to SC/ST category, from one of the under mentioned competent authorities.
- District Magistrate/Additional District Magistrate/Collector/Deputy Commissioner/Additional Deputy Commissioner/Deputy Collector/1st Class Stipendiary Magistrate/City Magistrate/Sub-Divisional Magistrate/Assistant Commissioner.
- Chief Presidency Magistrate/Additional Chief Presidency Magistrate/Presidency Magistrate.
- Revenue Officer not below the rank of the Tahsildar.
- Sub-Divisional Officer of the area where the candidate and/or his/her family normally reside.
- Administrator/Secretary to Administrator/Development Officer (Laccadive and Minicoy Islands).
Reservation of seats as per the University rules for SC/ST/OBC and physically challenged candidates.
Admission of Wards of Ex-servicemen personnel and serving personnel of the Defence/ armed Forces and all Police Forces who are in receipt of Gallantry Awards.
5% of the total number of seats are also reserved for this category seeking admission to the M.A. Linguistics Course. However, such candidates shall be required to fulfill the requirement of passing the Admission Test.
In order to become eligible, they should produce entitlement cards issued by any one of the following :
- Secretary, Kendriya Sainik Board, Delhi
- Secretary, Rajya Zila Sainik
- Office-in-charge, Record Office.
- 1st Class Stipendiary Magistrate.
Admission of Nepalese Students
Candidates sponsored by the Government of Nepal for the M.A. Linguistics Course in the Department will be given weightage of 5% in the minimum marks required. There will be, however, no reservation of seats for such candidates.

Dispute, if any, arising out of or relating to any matter whatsoever, concerning the process of admission shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the competent court in Delhi only. |
