Head,
Department of Bio-Physics,
University of Delhi South Campus,
Benito Juarez Road,
New Delhi-110021.

History

The Department was established in 1986 with one Professor and later more faculty members joined. It started with a research curriculum on membrane & theoretical biophysics. At present the department has a strong research programme on cognitive neuroscience and neural network, in particular, neuronal communication during the process of learning. Active research is on to study the regulation of various ion channels in both excitable and non-excitable cells. Techniques used include patch-clamp and bilayer electrophysiology. Emphasis is being given on the role of protein phosphorylation in ion-channel regulation.

 Department Profile

The department of Bio-Physics is situated in South Campus. It offers various courses such as:
M.Phil.
Ph.D.
The duration of courses is:
M.Phil. - 1 year
Ph.D. - 4 years

Achievements

This is a pioneering centre in India in the field of membrane biophysics & Electrophysiology. Most sophisticated electrophysiological facility, e.g. patch clamp & bilayer set up, has been established in the department. It has a number of research publications on ion channels in international journals. At present the deptt. is having collaborative research programmes with several national & international laboratories.
