History

The Department of Botany located on the North Campus was established in 1947. The Department is a premier centre of teaching and research in plant sciences. It’s rigorous standards and scholarship attract students and researchers from all over India and from other countries. The Department was recognized as a U.G.C. Centre of Advanced Study (CAS) in Botany in 1965. Based on its exemplary performance as a CAS for over 30 years, the Department has been selected for further assistance under the COSIST programme. The additional funding has led to improvisation and acquisition of equipments both for teaching and research laboratories. The Department has celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1997 with pride at its achievements and with a firm determination to stay in the forefront in the years ahead (At present, the Department has about 100 M.Sc., 18 M.Phil. and 60 Ph.D. students).

During the last 50 years as many as 400 students of the Department have been the recipients of Ph.D. degree. Alumni of the Department have distinguished themselves as teachers, scientists, science administrators and managers in corporate bodies. A sizable number has joined Central Services and Agricultural Research Service. Many former students occupy important positions in research laboratories and universities in India and abroad.

Most of the teachers have received advanced training in various institutes of excellence worldwide and have been collaborating with internationally renowned scientists through awards received from agencies such as Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation (Germany), CIDA/NESRC (Canada), Commonwealth Foundation (U.K.), DAAD (Germany), European Union (Brussels), Fullbright Smith Mundt Foundation (U.S.A.), Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (Japan), National Research Advisory Council (New Zealand), Royal Society (U.K.),UNDP (Paris). Major areas of their current research interest include Reproductive Biology, In vitro Morphogenesis, Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, Mycology and Plant Pathology, Ecology and Microbiology. The teachers and research scholars have published over 4500 research papers and technical reviews. They have in addition, authored/edited more than a hundred text books and reference books dealing with Plant Embryology, Pollen Physiology, Plant Tissue and Organ Culture, Morphogenesis, Taxonomy of Angiosperms, Microbial Ecology, Environment Bioremediation, Plant Physiology, Microtechniques and Molecular Biology. Some of these books have been translated into Japanese, Korean and Russian languages. Standard texts on all major plant groups (Algae, Fungi, Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms) have emerged from the Department of Botany. Teachers of the Department have also edited and authored books and course material for CBSE, NCERT and IGNOU.

During these years faculty members of the Department have conducted no less than 45 research projects sponsored by CSB, CSIR, DBT, DAE, DNES, DST, ICAR, INSA, UGC and some foreign agencies, such as Ford Foundation, Rockfeller Foundation, Stiftung Volkswagenwerk, University of Tokyo, European Union and Winrock. These research projects have not only resulted in improvement of the laboratories but have also led to greater orientation towards fundamental and applied research.

The Department has been acknowledged for its excellence and creativity. Late Professor Panchanan Maheshwari was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, Professor S.C. Maheshwari has been the recipient of the S.S. Bhatnagar Prize and the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship and Professor H.Y. Mohan Ram received the J.C. Bose and Om Prakash Bhasin awards. Drs I.V. Ramanuja Rao, V.P. Singh, Sujata Lakhani, Daman Saluja and J.R. Bhatt have been awarded INSA Medal for Young Scientists. Drs Meenakashi Kakkar, Neelam Sharma and Malti have won ISCA awards. Several teachers of the Department have been elected as fellows of the Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi, Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore, National Academy of Science, Allahabad and National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, New Delhi.
