The Department of Buddhist Studies was established in the University of Delhi in the year 1957 with the object inter alia to promote advanced Studies and reesrches in all branches learning and publish works of permanent value. To commemorate the 2500 years of Budhism and to pay homage to our ancient learning, the University of Delhi jointly with the Govt. of India planned to start the Department of Buddhist Study with all its branches. |

The Department of Buddhist Studies offers the research degrees of M.Phil. (one year course) and Ph.D. within Buddhism, the Department offer specializations in six core areas i.e. Buddhist History, Buddhist Philosophy, Pali based Buddhism,Tibetan Language and Buddhism, Classical Chinese Language and Buddhism.
At present the department is focussing on Engaged Buddhism, Environmental Buddhism, Deep Ecology, Bio-Ethics and Animal Rights.
Department of Buddhist Studies offers various courses besides M.Phil. & Ph.D. such as:
M.A. in Buddhist Studies (two-years course)
Certificate Course in Pali Language & Literature (One year course)
Diploma Course in Pali Language & Literature (One year course)

Prof. K.T.S.Sarao:
Visiting Pofessor at Sarbonne, Paris under the Indo-French Exchange Programme (UGC) in March - April, 2001.
Visiting fellow at St.Edmund's College, University of Cambridge for six months from August 1999 till January 2000.
Visiting fellow at Department of Religious Studies,Toronto University for a period of six months from June 1998 till November 1998.
FELLOWSHIPS, SCHOLARSHIPS & FREESHIPS:
Two department scholarships of Rs.500/- for M.Phil.students.
Other fellowships, scholarships occasionally available from the Ministry of Education and Culture, Indian Council of Philosophical Research, Rashtriya Sansthan, etc.
Freeships & half-freeships to poor and deserving students of M.A. course.
There is a provision of one annual Scholarship (if selected) for the students of Buddhist Studies to study in Tokyo University, Tokyo (Japan) under Tokyo-Delhi University Exchange Progamme. |

The Department has been able to develop a good library of the subject containing Pali Tipitaka in Nagari, Roman, Sinhalese, Burmese and Cambodian scripts, complete set of Zylograph of Tibetan Tipitaka, the Taisho edition of Chinese Tripitaka, Peking edition of Chinese Tripitaka and the standard books of research value of History, Philosophy, Art, Architecture, Religious tradition and languages.The Library of the Department was preserved in the main central Library of the University. |
