History

Since the inception of college in 1964 the department is functioning independently with the name as Preventive & Social Medicine. Recently, the Medical council of India has renamed the discipline as Community Medicine. Department runs 2 (Barwala and Alipur) and 1 urban (Gokulpuri) health centres and 2 health centres in slums. Department also provide medical services to Child Observation Home run by Prayas. The department is regional counselling centre on HIV/AIDS and has organized 40 state level training courses on counselling. It has also organized sixty two days state level training courses on HIV/AIDS for doctors, paramedical workers and group ‘D’ workers. The department is also a training centre for Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme for Delhi. The department has conducted training course on Hepatitis for doctors and nurses under Directorate of Health Services.

Achievements

  Faculty consists of recognised teachers of Delhi University and well renowned in their field of specialization. Faculty is known for their excellent achievements in academics and community based research, particularly in AIDS, Reproductive health, Tuberculosis, Polio, and Adolescent Health. Some of the achievements of the faculty are mentioned below:
(a) Dr. Malti Mehra is Regional coordinator, HIV / AIDS counselling. She has Conducted 44 training courses for the states of Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh UT. She has received distinguished teacher award by Indian Medical Association. Honoured with fellowship of Indian Public Health Association for her contribution in public health, and fellowship under Colombo Plan in UK.

(b) Dr. G. K. Ingle was awarded WHO fellowship in 1995-96 on Health Management.

(c) Dr. Vimal K. Gupta was awarded WHO fellowship on Management of Malaria field operations by Asian cllaborative training network (ACT Malaria), Dr. M.K. Seshadri Award and Gold Medal by ICMR in 1985 in community medicine on Intervention study on MCH Care in rural areas of India and Dr. S.S Verma Award by IPHA on Education of MCH Care in 1984.

(d) Dr. Suneela Garg was awarded WHO Biennium Fellowship in 1992-93:Epidemiology and Programme Management of HIV/AIDS, OVERSEAS DEVELOPMENT(ODA) Fellowship June-July1996: in Reproductive Health London School of Hygeine and Tropical Medicine, Indian Public Health Association Fellowship (March 2000), State AIDS Award for contribution in field of HIV/AIDS. She has completed four national and international projects.

(e) Dr. D. K. Taneja was awarded Doctors’ State Award in 1998 for meritorious services to public health, and is a fellow of Indian Association of Preventive and social Medicine.

(f) Dr. M.Meghachandra Singh has been elected a member of National Academy of Medical Sciences, India for his contribution in Community Medicine.
