The Department of Library and information Science was instituted under the Faculty of Arts in 1946 by the University of Delhi. Late Dr. S.R. Ranganathan and Late Prof. S. Das Gupta, took the initiative for establishing this Department which happened to be the first teaching department in the country taking heavy responsibilities in teaching as well as academic research in the field of Library Science and soon attained a very important and leading position in all the teaching departments of various Universities in India. The Department at present is providing B.Lib.Sc., M.L.I.Sc., M. Phil and Ph.D. courses to the students. The department completed its Golden Jubilee in 1996-97 by organizing a national seminar, which was attended by eminent Library and Information Science professionals. |

IT facilities:
The Department has pride possession of two well-equipped air-conditioned laboratories.
1. Research Laboratory:
The Researcher’s Laboratory is meant for research scholars (i.e. M. Phil and Ph.D. students) and the faculty members. The Research Laboratory is equipped with 8 Computers, 2 Printers, 1 Scanner, 1 Photocopier and Internet connection.
2.Computer Laboratory:
The Computer laboratory is meant for B. Lib. Sc. and M. L. I. Sc. students The first Computer Laboratory of B. Lib. Sc. and M. L. I. Sc. students has 12 Computers, 1 Laser printer and 1 heavy duty network printer. The Department has Local Area Network (LAN) on 16 port HUB having twelve Computer’s connectivity in Computer Laboratories, one connection in research laboratory and two connections in the department’s library.
3. Department Library:
The Departmental library is having a total collection of 18,000 documents which is being under process of computerization. The departmental library has 2 Computers, 1 Printer. Text book database containing records is now available for online access. Barcode system for circulation is being implemented.
4. Office of the Department: The office of the department has 2 Computers, 2 Printers and 1 Fax machine. |
