The Department of Microbiology was established in 1984 with initial programme to run the Masters course under the co-ordinatorship of Prof. H.S. Randhawa at Patel Chest Institute, University of Delhi, Delhi. The Department was shifted to it’s present site of South Campus in 1986, and subsequently one faculty member, Dr. R.K. Saxena was appointed to carry on the Master’s course. Later four more faculty members (Dr. T. Satyanarayana, Dr. Rani Gupta, Dr. R.C. Kuhad and Dr. J.S. Virdi) joined the department in 1988. Since then the department has developed and established its M.Phil.(Biotechnology) jointly with department of Biochemistry, Genetics and Biophysics, and a Ph.D. programme in Microbiology. An undergraduate course B.Sc. (Hons.) Microbiology was first started at Swami Shradhanand College, Delhi in 1987. Presently 4 colleges of the University offer this Hons. Course, and intake of students at undergraduate level is 80. The department, since its inception, has been actively engaged in research on various aspects of Microbiology. The major thrust areas being microbial differentiation; production, purification and characterization of industrial enzymes (lipases and esterases, amylases, proteases tannases, laccases, phytases and xylanases); biofertilizers (phosphate solubilization, mycorrhizae); fungal differentiation; lignocellulose biodegradation; metal recovery; bioremediation of soils contaminated with oil sludge, microbial diversity and emerging water-borne pathogens.
At present the total faculty strength of the department is 5 (Professors -2 and Readers--3) and Non-teaching 4 (Technical Assistant--1, Lab. Attendant -3). Teaching standards are always maintained to the level of international standards on various aspects of Microbiology. |
