The Department of Modern Indian Languages and Literary Studies, has been engaged in the teaching of Indian Languages -- Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Oriya, Sindhi, Tamil and Telugu -- and also literatures, written in different Indian languages, at different levels starting from the under-graduate to Ph.D. programme. The Department has been trying to build a discipline, "Comparative Indian Literature", with new orientation and endeavors, for the last 15 years. Our research programme, in the field of Comparative Indian Literature, has drawn the attention of scholars from other disciplines of Delhi University as well as different universities and institutions of the country. The Department has produced a good number of scholars, in the field of Comparative literature, Culture Studies and Folklore in past several years. The aims and objectives of different programmes have been designed keeping in mind the necessity of studying literature in a pluralistic linguistic and cultural situation that our country provides. In the previous academic year, the Department’s efforts were well recognized by the University Grants Commission, which considered the department as appropriate place for the study and research on literature, culture and folklore. |

The Department of Modern Indian Languages and Literary Studies, University of Delhi since its inception in 1960 is in a position to play a role model in creating a unique center for the study of Indian languages, literature and culture. Through different activities, the Department has succeeded in creating a separate identity by promoting the literary studies in a way of understanding the mosaic form of Indian culture, which has direct implications on the pluralistic nature of Indian languages, literature and culture.
