Operational Research as a subject was first introduced in the regular curriculum of the Department of Marhematics and Mathematical Statistics, University of Delhi way back in the year 1962. A two year post-graduate course in Operational Research was instituted in the Department in 1963. Soon after its introduction, there has been a spurt of research activities in a number of areas of Operational Research. Currently research is being carried out in major areas such as (i) Mathematical Programming (ii) Reliability Theory (iii) Queueing Theory (iv) Inventory Management (v) Networks & Sequencing (vi) Marketing. In the year 1973, the Department of Operational Research was independently set up under the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences. Further, M.Phil. Course was introduced by the Department in 1977. The Department has produced about 50 Ph.D’s and over 80 M.Phil.’s. In 1994, M.A./M.Sc. Course in Applied Operational Research was started at the University of Delhi South Campus. In both M.Sc. Operational Research and M.A./M.Sc. Applied Operational Research Courses, there is a compulsory project work so as to provide practical training to the students, in which they are required to work on a practical problem from Industries and Public Undertakings and submit their findings in the form of a project report for evaluation. Further, Operational Research was introduced as an elective subject at B.Sc. Level in 1996.
It is a matter of pride for the Department, that a large number of our students are presently having top executive positions in industries both Public & Private Sectors. To name a few, such organizations are State Trading Corporation, Indian Airlines, Fertilizer Corporation of India (Planning & Development).
Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., Delhi Transport Corporation, Food Corporation of India, Indian Oil Corporation, The Minerals and Metals Trading Corporation, American Universal Electric India Ltd., CMC Ltd., National Informatics Center, C-DOT, GE Capital India Ltd.etc.
The Department has also organized regular Seminars, Workshops and Conferences at National as well as International levels. Moreover, the Faculty members have visited and, received visitors from various institutes in India and other countries such as USA, Canada, Germany, Denmark, Australia, Zimbabwe. Faculty members have also been regularly participating in National and International Conferences. |

The Department of Operational Research is running M.Sc., M.Phil. and Doctoral program in Operational Research. The Department admits 60 students in M.Sc., 15 in M.Phil. and on average 5-6 Ph.D. students every year. Department is also running M.A./M.Sc. Applied Operational Research Course at South Campus. The Courses have been attracting bright students. Past students have found employment with reputed Industrial houses and academic institutions in India and abroad.
The syllabi of all the courses are constantly revised to keep pace with changing needs of industries. Keeping the Interdisciplinary nature of the subject in mind new papers in Information Technology and Application areas have been introduced in the syllabi in recent past (e.g. Software Engineering, Data warehousing and Data mining, Financial Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Portfolio Management).
A great emphasis is placed on strengthening the liaisoning with the industry by having industry oriented seminars.
The department have well managed computer lab with 30 computers on a Local Area Network equipped with variety of software such as SPSS, Matlab, MiniTab, MS-Project, LINGO/LINDO, Mapple, Oracle 9i, SQL Server 2000.
The Lecture Halls are equipped with all the Audio-Visual Teaching Aids (LCD Projector, Visualizer etc.) |
