History

Located in the heart of the main Humanities Block of the Arts Faculty, North Campus, facing an inner quadrangle garden, the Department of Philosophy is one of the oldest in the University of Delhi. This building is well known for its red brick colonial structure built in the early part of the twentieth century. Recently the main North Campus of Delhi University has been given Heritage Status resulting in a greener and more planned paved spaces in and around the complex. The South Campus Philosophy Department rooms too have the pleasant atmosphere of being situated in a modern architectural complex in South Delhi, interspaced with beautiful gardens. Both campuses are well connected with public transport.

This Department began as a combined Department of Philosophy and Psychology in the year 1953. The Department of Psychology became independent in 1962. Since then the Department of Philosophy is an Autonomous Department. The Department conducts its academic programme out of two campuses, one at the South Campus and the other at the North Campus of the Delhi University.

Various distinguished scholars who have either taught or been associated with the Department of Philosophy, Delhi University include N.V. Banerjee, S.S Barlingay, Margaret Chatterjee, S.K. Saxena, Ram Chandra Gandhi and Mrinal Miri. A large number of eminent philosophers from India and abroad have lectured in the department. Philosophers from abroad include Donald Davidson, Willard Quine, Peter Strawson, Akeel Bilgrami, Anil Gupta, Martha Nussbaum, Richard Sorabjee, Elliot Sober, Hajime Nakamura, among many others.

 Department Profile

The Department has a prestigious programme of teaching and research at the level of M.A., M.Phil and Ph.D respectively, covering a diversity of areas in Philosophy: Classics of Western Philosophy, Classical Indian Philosophy, Logic, Ethics, Theory of Knowledge, Philosophy of Language, Contemporary Analytic Philosophy, Indian Philosophy of Language, Phenomenology, Existentialism, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Science, and Social & Political Philosophy, among others.

The members of the Faculty of the Department have had an ongoing record of participating in seminars and conferences in India and abroad. The Department draws students for all its programmes from different parts of India and from abroad. Worthy of special mention, amongst these, is the successful University of California programme of visiting students for M.A. courses in recent years.

All members of the Faculty are actively engaged in research, which has resulted in the publication of a large number of books, reports, and articles in Philosophy journals and anthologies in India as well as in International journals and publications. The Department has also undertaken several research projects during the last four decades. Various members of the Department have also been actively associated with the Indian Council of Philosophical Research, University Grant Commission and The Institute of Advanced Studies, Simla in the on-going research and teaching in Philosophy, among other philosophical institutes and programmes in India and abroad.

Encouraging new dimensions of the Philosophy Department’s programme are, first of all, a newly restructured Syllabus for its M.A. programme to which all present members of the Department have enthusiastically contributed. Beginning from July 2006, it is a programme based on semester system, with both compulsory and optional papers covering a wide range of philosophical interests creating a platform for both students and teachers to express their diverse commitments to the subject.

A second new facet of the Department is the benefit from the ‘Heritage Status’ that Delhi University received a few years ago. That is, the Philosophy Department now has more prime space in the main Arts Faculty Building in the North Campus, that has enabled the department to have a larger library of its own catering to the needs of the departmental courses and research interests of the members. There is now a spacious reading room and seminar hall. Facilities like suitable computers have been provided to the members for ongoing research and more specific equipments would soon be available in the seminar room for computer work, viewing relevant films and discussion sessions etc. Other public conveniences and tea rooms have been planned that are likely to be implemented soon.

A schedule of interdisciplinary seminars, conferences and workshops with scholars and teachers from the colleges, other departments and universities, from India and abroad, will be posted at this site periodically.
