History

The department was established in 1952, with about 40 Postgraduate students. Since then the strength of the students has gone up to 300 and the faculty strength is presently 16. The research activity of the department has also correspondingly grown over time. Since 1982 over 150 Ph. D. degrees have been awarded and since 1987, approximately 412 students have successfully completed M. Phil. degrees.

The growth of the Department has coincided with the progress of the discipline of political science from a narrow body of legal and institutional knowledge to a more comprehensive social science that integrates and interrogates sociological, economic, philosophical and cultural dimensions and thereby better relates to a purposive study of politics keeping especially the Indian reality in focus. The department offers M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. programmes through a process of cooperative teaching with the help of teachers from various colleges of the University. In addition, diploma programmes in International Law and Law of International Institutions are offered through the Indian Academy of International Law, New Delhi. The founding head of the Department, Professor C.J.Chacko, was an expert in this field. Among the earliest faculty, members of Pennsylvania, a specialist in Indian, South Asian, and international politics. The Department was perhaps the first academic unit in the country to have introduced compulsory M.A. courses in Modern Indian Political Thought during the Headship of Professor Randhir Singh. On the collaborative research front, the department is committed on an inter-disciplinary thematic thrust area of Democracy, Development and Peace, with generous support by University Grants Commission as Departmental Special Assistance. This is the third phase of DSA which was initially granted by the UGC in 1989. This will help build on the traditional strengths in various sub-fields as well as across disciplinary boundaries. This thematic thrust area will strive to capture the centrality of modern political life in India and beyond in a research agenda that will also translate into meaningful policy choices for developing countries in general and India in particular.
