The Department of Mathematical Statistics was established in August 1973, though the teaching of M.A. in Mathematical Statistics had been introduced in July 1957 at the initiative of Professor Ram Behari. Professor H. C. Gupta was the first Head of the Department who developed a good school of Stochastic Processes. In 1987, the Department was renamed as the Department of Statistics.
Besides, the teaching of Mathematical Statistics as a subsidiary subject continued in two colleges in sixties and early seventies of the twentieth century. By eighties, the B.A. (Honours) Course in Mathematical Statistics was adopted by seven colleges under the academic control of the Department. In 1991, the Statistics (Honours) Course was revised and rechristened B.Sc.(Hons.) Statistics (integrated). The course was restructured in 1998 to embrace and encompass the latest in Statistical Science.
With the view to preparing research background of the students, the M. Phil. Course in Mathematical Statistics was introduced in 1977. The M. Sc. And M. Phil. Courses are revised periodically in the light of the revisions of B. Sc.(Hons.) and M.Sc. Courses, respectively.
The members of the department are conducting and supervising research in the of areas random walk and fluctuation theory, combinatorial methods in stochastic process and rank order statistics, nonparametric statistical inference, sequential analyses, urn models and probability distributions, stochastic probability models, survival and reliability theory, design of experiments, survey sampling, robustness of statistical decisions (classical and Bayesian), statistical predications and forecasting, bio-statistics and non-linear stochastic modelling. The faculty members and research students publish their work in the national and international journals.
The Department is in the process of revising the M. Sc. Course in the light of the recent U.G.C. model syllabus. Courses on Actuarial Statistics, Environmental Statistics, and Statistical Computing will be the high lights of the new M. Sc. Syllabus. |
